Introduction
Health insurance in general can be confusing
enough these days, having to pick a general
practitioner with a plan and knowing which benefits
are covered.
Most people just go with whatever their company
provides them and only learn the differences once
they actually experience the service provided. Then,
when comparing notes, these folks might realize
some plans are better for their situation than others.
But it doesn’t have to be a process of trial and error. Some self-education on how coverage plans work
can help avoid big mistakes later on.
The Concept of Care Being Managed
It’s a label that is thrown around quite a bit and gives an
impression of a business manager scheduling every
medical treatment, bandage, and prescription on
spreadsheet. And, in a sense, that is what managed care
is. It is health care that is subject to a business model to
meet a minimum level of care but not to exceed certain
price caps without some kind of decision-process of
review and approval. Managed care has been in the last
thirty years the most common type of health care for
most Americans.
The primary goal of managed care, since it is paid for by
insurance companies, is to provide medical coverage
plans in such a way as to keep costs down. This is done
through a series of approval systems, automating the
decision process. The long-term effect causes a
reduction in costs that would otherwise just occur “on the
natural” in unrestricted care.
